Gather evidence before flagging
Screenshot the review with timestamp. Check if the reviewer has a history of reviewing competitors. Note if the review appeared during a competitor campaign.
Flag the review in Google Maps
Find the review → three-dot menu → Flag as inappropriate. Select the most specific violation type available. Generic reports have very low success rates.
Submit a formal report via Search Console
For business owners: Google Search Console → Legal Removal Requests → provides a more formal channel than the Maps flag.
Document the reviewer profile
New accounts with 1-3 reviews that are all negative are strong indicators of fake reviews. Google's systems weight this.
Escalate with a legal notice if rejected
A formal letter citing specific Google policy sections and European consumer protection law has a much higher approval rate than a standard flag.
